This was based on a some (limited) information which I have come accross.
Wikipedia states that during the Ming Dynasty the Qilin were often depicted with more oxen-like bodies, or thick and bulky. I've seen many many many examples of Qilin in Beijing as apearing more like the body type of a thick bluky work horse. So, this will be my very simple profile sketch of a Ming Dynasty Qilin... as we know of it so far.... It's pretty much up to the artist anyway...  Also during the Ming Dynaty admiral Zheng He navigated the Asian seas on a mission to spread Ming (Chinese) culture and bring back knowlege of the world. On his travels, he brought back 2 giraffes which were also thought to be Qilin. So, during that period girraffes were also called Qilin. NOTES: I realize it's drawn in a profile view... very plain and borring, but the scales detailing took me 3 days. I'm out of practice, and I wanted it to look palletable to the eye... It's probably not the best on Earth... but, I'm satisfied with it. |
